Understanding Spiritual Survival from a Christian perspective may be a little challenging at first glance. A sizable percentage of the prepping and survival community is Christian; yet all too often, we talk about our survival plans as if God had nothing to do with them. Yet nothing could be farther from the truth. Without God’s help and intervention, none of us have much of a chance of surviving anything – not even if we Bug Out.
Truly, we must be dependent upon God. But that dependence needs to start long before a disaster hits. If we expect to live by faith in the midst of a crisis and haven’t been living by faith in our day-to-day lives, we are going to fail miserably. Learning to live by faith requires time and practice. It also requires going through the hard times, so that you can become accustomed to leaning on the Lord in the midst of them.
Any survival planning you do must include the Lord. That’s where Spiritual Survival needs to start. You and I both need the guidance of the Holy Spirit to decide on everything from the right amount of gear, to the right place to Bug Out to. Trying to do these things in our own strength or knowledge puts us at a distinct disadvantage and in the same boat as those in the world; as if we didn’t have God’s help readily available to us.
There’s more to Spiritual Survival than just asking God to help us make the right plans. To be honest, the average Christian today is spiritually lazy. We expect a pastor to do everything for us, rather than thinking for ourselves and doing what God calls us to to ourselves. But what are we going to do when that pastor isn’t there? Have you made plans to bring your pastor along as part of your Spiritual Survival plan? Do you have enough supplies to feed him and his family too?
One of the beauties of the New Testament is the priesthood of the believer. We don’t need a pastor or priest between ourselves and God, because we already have one in Jesus Christ. Jesus, in His role as the High Priest, intercedes for us continually before the Father. So, while a pastor maybe useful (If they’re not working as part of the clergy response teams), they are not a requirement for us to find and depend on God.
However, few believers are truly prepared to encounter God on their own. We are a nation of spiritual babies, expecting our pastors to change our diapers and give us our bottles. That won’t get us through a survival situation and enable Spiritual Survival. We’re going to have to know the Word of God to understand how to stand on our own two feet, as well as how to pastor others.
When a disaster or significant persecution arises, we’re going to have to be ready to spiritually care for our families. The Bible you bring will be the only “pastor” you have. And if you lose your Bible – You’re going to need to know the Bible; know how to teach it and know how to live it. We’re also going to have to know how to give counsel from it; pray for our families when they are sick and witness to those we encounter. Discipleship is the Great Commission but it starts in our own home first.
You will need to be prepared to feed your family spiritually, so that their faith can remain steadfast and strong. Regular family Bible studies or even home church services will need to become part of your Spiritual Survival plan. If you’ve never experienced God in the middle of a meadow in the mountains, you’re missing out. Some of the greatest spiritual experiences of your life may very well happen after you Bug Out and are dependent on God.
To do that, we need to prepare ourselves today; otherwise, we won’t be ready for the life we are going to live tomorrow. If you are not a serious student of the Word of God, then I’ve got to say that you aren’t ready right now. You’re still expecting someone else to do it for you; and as long as you’re doing that, you’re not going to know how to count on God, when things go bad.
